Whole Group Foundational Skills
We have struggling readers in all of our grades k-4. However, we have not provided professional development to our upper grade teachers on how to meet the needs of their struggling learners in the areas of phonemic awareness, word analysis, and fluency. I worked in collaboration with one of our Early Literacy Specialists to create professional development for our third and fourth-grade teachers.Â
Small Group Instruction
The needs of our learners are quite diverse. Our teachers work tirelessly to find resources to support them. This year, our district has moved away from balanced literacy, using the three cueing system, to the Science of Reading (SOR), using systematic phonics instruction. Currently, our instructional team is working in concert to create professional development for our teachers to learn the content of SOR. Within this work, we are also creating Google Slide decks as a template they can use for students at each level of the reading continuum.
